a panic attack or panic attack disorder "(EPD) is a period of intense fear or discomfort, typically with a sudden onset and usually lasting less than thirty minutes. Symptoms include trembling, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, dizziness, hyperventilation, paresthesias (tingling sensations), tachycardia, feeling of suffocation or asphyxiation. The disorder is significantly different from other types of anxiety disorders, because the attacks are sudden, there appears to be caused by anything and often debilitating. An episode is often categorized as a vicious cycle where the mental symptoms increase the physical symptoms, and vice versa.

Most people who have an attack, then have more later. If a person has repeated attacks, or feels severe anxiety about the possibility of having another attack, then is said to have a panic disorder.
